It was naive of me to believe that, by appealing to conscience and imagination, I could budge the literary status quo. History shows that a status quo is always reactionary; will always lack imagination and creativity, and be unreceptive to new ideas. This has been the case even as the flames of change rise around the moldy institutions to which they forever cling.
